Capture the love without the stress

Because a Family Session Should be Full of Giggles

Let's be real - family photos can be stressful. If photos aren't your forte, you would rather be organizing your sock drawer than putting yourself in front of a camera. It took a long time for me to learn a solid set of tips and tricks that make this a pain-free and, dare I say, even enjoyable experience.

No matter what you do during the day of your shoot, remember that all you have to do is be in the moment and enjoy time with your family.

Remember, this session is for you to create and have lasting memories. Don't be afraid to make it your own. Have a favorite playlist? Let's play it on my Bluetooth speaker! Love your dog? Bring them to the session for cuddles! Feel best at home? Let's start the session there!

An Annual Ritual You Can Cherish Forever

tips and Tricks to make family photos a breeze

Leave your Calendar Empty

Do not schedule anything else on the day of your shoot. You never know how much more time we'll need to capture the feeling, and this is one of the major components of your big day you won't want to rush.

Look and Feel your Best

The week leading up to photos should be filled with drinking lots of water and avoiding alcohol and greasy/ salty foods. All that water and a clean diet will prevent puffiness, dehydration, and red eyes.

Bring the Energy

You want to be energized, refreshed, alert, and open, so steer clear of the tough workouts the day or two before your shoot to avoid stiffness that'll make movement awkward in photos.

THE CHALLENGES AND pain points

Where Love is the Main Character

what to expect during your family photography session

No Forced Poses

I will give you directions and suggestions for a motion to make your images come to life. The most important thing is to focus on each other.

It's a Collaboration

I will be showing you the back of the camera along the way, don't hesitate to be specific with me about what you like and don't like. It's about creating a vision together.

You're in a Safe Space

Almost every single person (even actors and models) has a fear of having their photo taken. Know that you're not alone, and my number one goal is to make you feel comfortable.

Tech-neck is real and I understand, use these tips to help your posture.

I aim to capture the natural, and I don't use photoshop to alter the image. I will remind you of your posture throughout the session because it's the best way to sculpt the body in-camera and without photoshop. There is an element to many photoshoots that is somewhat like yoga or finding peace and comfort within the tension.

Try to imagine a string pulling you upwards through the top of your head, making you long and tall. Looking for a long and graceful neck? Pull your shoulders and shoulder blades back and down.

How’s your jaw doing? Intentionally relax it. Curl your tongue to the back of your mouth and this will relax the muscles in your neck

Bending at the hip will bring your face closer to the camera without collapsing your posture.

Everyone has a double chin. Keep those shoulders pulled back and downward while sliding your chin forward (some know this as "the turtle") to engage a more flattering pose. And remember, we will always show you what you look like on the camera, so you're not guessing.

"Bethany did such an amazing job! I’m in love with all the newborn photos she took of my son and our family photos. So glad we took the leap and hired her to take our first family pics as a family of three. We will have these memories forever! Great experience, great quality, and loved how relaxed she made us feel. Highly recommend!"

Outfit Advice

What to wear for your Family Session

Why it matters

Selecting the right clothing for family photos is a crucial element in capturing timeless photos. While an outfit may look great in person, its impact on camera can be quite different. Opting for neutral and muted colors ensures a timeless quality, allowing the focus to remain on the faces and interactions within the photograph rather than on distracting patterns or bright hues. If you plan to print and frame your images think about the design and color choices in your home. Choose outfits that compliment your style and tone.

Pro tip: If you want timeless prints black and white images are best!

Options

It's a great idea to bring two clothing options with you. This gives us the opportunity to work together at the location to choose the outfits that will best complement the setting. If you're not comfortable changing on-site, no worries! You can take pictures of both outfit options in advance and then share them with me. This way, I can provide helpful input and suggestions before we even get to the location. Our goal is to make sure your chosen wardrobe not only reflects your family's style but also blends seamlessly with the surroundings.

Personality

Your comfort is key because it directly influences the atmosphere of our shoot.Your clothing should be a reflection of your personalities, acting as a subtle amplifier rather than overshadowing who you are. When you're at ease in your outfits, it allows your true selves to shine through. I want your personalities to take center stage, and your clothing choices are there to enhance, not overpower.

Logistics

Expect the unexpected and be ready for anything by packing snacks, drinks, and extra outfits. Kids are full of surprises, and having these essentials on hand can be a lifesaver if there's a sudden meltdown or a delightful mess. By embracing the unpredictable nature of family sessions, we can turn unexpected moments into cherished memories. Let me guide your kiddos and try to relax. Our kids can feel when we're stressed.

Movement

When selecting your wardrobe, consider how different fabrics may affect your ability to move freely and naturally. Softer, more breathable materials allow for a greater range of movements. If it's a cooler day, layering is a fantastic option to add both style and warmth. For warmer weather, lighter fabrics like linen can keep you comfortable and showcase movement gracefully. A quick reminder: please ensure your clothing is wrinkle-free by ironing or steaming before the session, as post-session editing may not fully remedy wrinkles.

Colors & Patterns

It's important to be mindful of certain colors, particularly fluorescents, as they can cast strong tones, affecting the overall color balance. I recommend choosing colors that complement your skin tones. If you've had a color analysis done then refer to their recommendations.

If you're considering patterns choose designs that maintain a cohesive and elegant look.I recommend avoiding thin stripes because the camera can produce a wavy pattern called moiré when a subject's clothing contains repetitive details that are too fine for the camera's sensor.

Shoes

Shoes are an essential part of an outfit but they are always forgotten. They can either enhance or detract from the overall look. Overly casual shoes llike bright sneakers, crocs, or scuffed-up sandals can be distracting. If you don't have shoes that work for your session you can always opt to go barefoot if your session location allows for that.

Accessories

From stylish hats to a cozy picnic setup or even including your beloved dog, these elements can add a personal touch and enhance the overall charm of our session. Accessories not only contribute to the visual appeal but can also reflect your family's unique personality and interests. Feel free to bring props that hold special meaning to you.

“Bethany caught the personality and uniqueness of our children in the photos she took, which makes them all the more precious to us. She not only has a gifted eye, but a natural ability to connect with people and make them feel comfortable during a session. We are amazed by the way she is able to use images to tell a story about people as they truly are, and are thankful that she was able to do that for our family.”

“Bethany did a wonderful job shooting our family photos this year, which was no small task with a 4 year old and a 1 year old! (both of whom were having bad days of course). She was patient, creative, and captured an amazing variety of scenes in two hours. The beautiful finished photos convey each of our personalities and each unique relationship within our family. We couldn’t be happier with them or with Bethany!”

Finishing touches

Getting Ready for Your Session

The night before, press and lay out everything you need so you're calm in the morning.

Hair & Makeup

If you're not already hiring someone to handle your makeup, you'll want to remember to add a bit more than you usually do (if you don't wear any, wear what makes you comfortable). Note that eyeliner on the upper lid and a contrasting eyeshadow color in your crease draws attention to your eyes, and a bright and bold lipstick makes your teeth look whiter.

Glasses

If you feel your best with your frames on, make sure they have a non-reflective lens or coating; otherwise, we'll miss your eyes with spontaneous glares. You can have a coating added if you don't already have one.

Undergarments

When it comes to undergarments, consider what will be flattering and the look you're going for. Do you want Spanx for slimming, a slip for smoothing, a bra that's minimizing, or has extra padding? Purchase items that are close to your skin tone.

Treat Yourself!

To those who don’t usually pamper themselves, don’t feel shy. Get a nice haircut, trim your beard and ear hairs, wax your eyebrows, get a facial or a manicure.

Get a good night of sleep and a hearty breakfast so that you have energy during a long period when you may not have an opportunity to stop and snack.

“I've never enjoyed getting my photo taken and I felt totally at ease with Bethany.”

The results were so beautiful and natural. They remain some of my favorite photos of my husband and myself. She captured each of us so naturally and I genuinely enjoyed the time we had with her. I would recommend Bethany to anyone and everyone!

— Molly

“She let us be ourselves and be silly and then be serious, and somehow she managed to take the most amazing shots of us. "

There was not a single bad photo in the lot, and most importantly, we just had an absolute blast and it was all totally natural. I cannot recommend Bethany enough!

If you need to cancel, we will keep your 50% deposit. If you need to reschedule,

I back up the photos from your family session the night of your session. I have a rigorous backup system and have them stored in 3 separate places before your photos are delivered, and two backup options after your images are delivered.

Can you photoshop us to look skinnier/have clear skin/etc?

I pose you and your family in a way that makes you look your best without needing Photoshop. I do remove blemishes and apply skin smoothing when required.

How does the album design process work?

You will select your favorite images through the Pic-Time platform, and then we will begin the design process. Most clients only have one round of edits, and then their final design is ready for print!
