Aim for golden hour (about 1–2 hours before sunset) for the most flattering light

Morning sessions are beautiful for softer light and fewer crowds

If you’re unsure, I’ll help you pick the best timing for your schedule and wedding plans.

Choosing the Right Location

Urban settings (downtown streets, architecture, cafés)

A meaningful location where you met, got engaged, or love spending time together

Great options include:

Tips to consider:

Decide on the overall vibe you want (romantic, playful, modern, natural)

Make sure your outfit choices work with the location

our most common question

What Should We Wear

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Choose a muted color palette rather than identical outfits.

Think:
✓ Neutrals (cream, beige, tan, gray)
✓ Soft tones (sage, dusty blue, muted rust)
✓ One main color with 1–2 complementary tones

Lay your outfits next to each other; if they look good together, they’ll photograph beautifully.

Choose Timeless Over Trendy

Classic pieces photograph best and won’t feel dated years from now.

Try to avoid:
✓ Neon or very bright colors
✓ Large logos or bold graphics
✓ Extremely trendy patterns or styles

Timeless outfits, so the focus is on you

Comfort Is Essential

Clothing choices should feel comfortable and not overpower your look.

Choose clothing that:
✓ Allows movement and walking
✓ Doesn’t need constant adjusting
✓ Feels natural to wear and matches your personality

When you're at ease in your outfits, it allows your true selves to shine through.

Add Layers & Texture

Layers add depth and visual interest.

Great options:
✓ Jackets, cardigans, or light sweaters
✓ Textured fabrics like linen, knit, or soft cotton

Layers also give us flexibility if the temperature changes during your session.

Choosing Colors & Patterns

Steer clear of busy patterns and overly bright colors as they can distract from the genuine moments we want to capture.

Things to consider:
✓ Opt for smaller, more subtle designs for a cohesive and elegant look.
✓ Choose shades that flatter your skin tone: lighter skin tones look best in softer colors for lighter skin tone, brighter hues often suit olive or darker tones

Shoes & Accessories Matter

Shoes and accessories appear more often than you might expect.

Choose:
✓ Neutral, clean shoes that match your outfit style
✓ Simple jewelry and hair accessories
✓ Pieces that complement rather than distract

Selecting the right clothing for engagement photos is crucial in capturing timeless photos. The goal is to look like yourselves, feel comfortable, and coordinate without overthinking. Most couples arrive in one outfit and change into their second option halfway through the session. Feel free to bring meaningful props. Stylish hats, a cozy picnic setup, or even your fur baby can add personality and charm.

Preparing for Your Session

The night before, press and lay out everything you need so you're calm in the morning.

Grooming & Self-Care

Schedule haircuts about a week before the photos

Trim facial hair

Consider self-care that helps you feel confident (brows, nails, skincare)

Start the Day Relaxed

Lay out your outfits and accessories the night before

Make sure everything is pressed and fits comfortably

Get a good night’s sleep so you look rested.

Makeup Tips

Aim for a polished version of your everyday look

Slightly more definition than usual photographs well

Bring a brush, hair tie, or touch-up items just in case

Glasses

If you feel your best with your frames on, don't worry. I retouch each image to make sure there is no glare in your images.

If you have transitions then please consider removing them while taking photos outside. They transition even in the shade.

Keep your schedule open the day of your session so you don’t feel rushed or frazzled.

Steer clear of tough workouts a day or two before the session so you aren’t stiff or sore.

Drink lots of water and avoid alcohol and greasy/salty foods the week before to prevent puffiness, dehydration, and red eyes.

a final note from bethany

You don’t need to perform, pose, or be anything other than yourselves.

The best engagement photos come from connection, trust, and being present together — and that’s exactly what we’ll focus on.

We can’t wait to photograph this season of your story.
