If you are searching for Prospect Park photos for your family, you probably already know this park is something special. The wide open meadows, the wooded paths, the way the light filters through the trees during golden hour. It is one of those places that does not need much help to look beautiful.
But here is what I have learned after years of photographing families all over Brooklyn. The park is just the backdrop. The real magic comes from what your family brings to it.

Why Prospect Park Works So Well for Family Sessions
Prospect Park is one of my favorite spots for Brooklyn family photography, and it’s not just because it is gorgeous. It is because of the many perfect photo spots you can find within a short walk of each other. We can start on the grass where the kids can run and be themselves, move to the trails for something a little more private, and finish near the water for golden-hour portraits. There is always somewhere new to go, which, as a photographer, is important so that no two family photo sessions look the same, even if they are at the same location.
For families with young kids, especially, this is everything. When a toddler loses their cool in one area, we move to the next. The session keeps going. And honestly, some of my favorite shots happen in those in-between moments. Siblings holding hands as they walk to the next spot, a dad tossing a kid in the air to get them there faster, the little jokes or smiles as they walk, talking about what sweet treat they will get after the photos.

The First Thirty Minutes Are Just Warming Up
I know that no one is totally comfortable in front of the camera; it definitely takes time and practice. Do not expect the best shots to happen right away. Kids need time to settle in, especially in a new place, and that is completely okay. The first stretch is when everyone is still a little stiff, a little aware that someone is pointing a camera at them. Parents are still reminding kids to smile nicely and then forgetting to smile themselves. That is all normal, and it is exactly why I never rush.
But after that first thirty minutes, the kids forget I am even there. You stop worrying about whether everyone is looking in the same direction. Your daughter starts twirling because she feels like it, not because anyone asked her to. Your son shows me his best superhero pose completely unprompted. That is when we start getting the shots you will want to frame. The trick is getting them involved in the photos and not just smiling for the camera. I want the photos where your kid’s personality is in full effect, sometimes that’s not just a smile at the camera!

What Your Prospect Park Session Will Look Like
Every family is different, so I always let yours lead the way. But here is a general idea of how our time together tends to go.
We usually start somewhere open so the kids have room to move and we can all get comfortable with each other. I am not going to line everyone up and count to three. We are going to walk around, play a little, and let things happen on their own. I might ask the kids to show me their best jump. I suggest you and your partner walk together while I follow. The whole point is to get you out of “photo mode” as fast as possible, because that is where the good stuff lives.
From there, we move through the park based on where the light is. I am paying attention to all of it, the way the light is hitting, how the kids are feeling, the little moments happening right between the posed ones. Those are the shots my clients are still talking about years later.

The Best Time for Family Photos
Golden hour at Prospect Park is worth the wait. There are two times when Golden Hour happens, early in the morning and later in the afternoon. I always suggest the late afternoon, so you don’t have to wake them up early in the morning for something they might not want to do. If your family can swing an evening session, that is always my first recommendation.
That said, morning light is just as beautiful, and if your little ones are better in the morning, we can absolutely work with that. I would rather have happy kids in good light than perfect light and a meltdown.
